How to Rise from Heartbroken to Resolved

Many say that the world has changed after the events of this week. Maybe it has. Maybe it has always been this way but this time we simply couldn’t turn a blind eye or numb out to it.

Many were completely heartbroken after this weeks events. I understand that.

We should be heartbroken. No matter where you stand on any of this, if anything at all, we should all be heartbroken.

I stood on the steps of that glorious building with my children a few summers before. I marveled at its beauty, its history, the reverence. The stories held within those walls were and are sacred to me. Beautiful. To imagine the people who walked those halls, the laws that were made, the justice that was fought for, the hopes that were debated about was a sight to behold.

To see a confederate flag waving in those halls was pure grief. A disgrace to every man and woman who have died and sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

There are so many things I could talk about on this little corner of the internet, but it would only perhaps add to the noise. I could talk about respect, shame, racism, pride, nationalism, and so many other subjects. The reality is that we all must contend with each of those things in our own hearts and homes and souls on our own time, on our knees and in deep communion and stillness with God. He is the only one who can restore truth.

My daughter loves American History. She says she either wants to be an actress or a history teacher. When she asked me, “Why are people doing this?” All I could say was, “They are wrong. They think they can and they are wrong.”

Entitlement breeds injustice.

God where are you in the midst of this chaos?

God where are you in the brokenness of this land?

God, what do I tell me children? How will I protect them? What kind of world are they growing up in and can I keep them safe?

I am reminded of Joseph in Genesis. A good kid, probably a teenager, a dreamer. Sold into slavery by his own brothers.

Where was God in the midst of the hate of the brothers when they exchanged money for the life of their brother?

Where was God when Joseph was abused and accused and imprisoned, seemingly forgotten and broken?

What was Joseph believing about the world and about God in those moments? Where was his protector, the God of his grandfather Abraham and his father Jacob? Where was his refuge and safety in that far away land and vile prison?

God places, he sets up and he sets apart for his greater purpose. A purpose we can not fully know, understand or achieve on our own.

Genesis 39:2 says, “The Lord was with Joseph…” God was with Joseph on his way through the Egyptian desert, placed in Potiphar’s house for a greater purpose. And He was with Joseph in prison. He was always his safety, always his protector.

Joseph was resolved. Perhaps in the pit of prison and in the midst of heaviness and heartbreak, he came to understand God’s ways and his love more than ever before.

So today, dear ones, know that God is in our midst, he is the very air your breathe. He sees you and hears your hearts sorrows that this world has stricken you with and he will draw you near to him. Ezekiel 34:15-16 says, “I will tend my flock and make them lie down, declares the Lord God. I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak.”

Remind your children of the Faithfulness of God. Remind them of his truth. Remind them of your faith. Remind them that he is Love. Remind them of the words of our savior, “In this world you will have many trials and sorrows. But take hear, because I have overcome the world.” Jn. 16:33 NLT.

Rise, brothers and sisters, from the hour of sorrow and shame and be resolved like so many who have come before us, so many who have suffered sorrow, upheaval and brokenness and were placed, set up and set apart for such a time.

Be resolved to the power of faith in Christ alone like Daniel, and Esther and Joseph who proclaimed, “…it was to save lives that god send me before you” Genesis 45:5.

We have been placed on this earth, at this time, in this nation to save lives through the truth of the Gospel.

Be stirred up!

Share the Good news of Christ.

Let us pray fervent prayers as Paul wrote in his last letter to the Philippians, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” v. 20-21.
